Fun in the garden

Enjoying the great British summer!

August is a time to enjoy being outside in our gardens and make the most of the summer – so we’ve got a few ideas in this issue to help you do just that.

Living in Surrey, we’re blessed with acres of leafy woodland in which to take a relaxing stroll throughout the year. But it’s nice to have a tree or two in your own garden. They attract wildlife and, of course, can provide a source of delicious fruit for us as well, not to mention some welcome shade. So it’s something to consider – see below for details.

We’ve also got some tasty cocktail recipes for you – and thoughts on a suitable parasol to sip it under!

We hope you have an awesome August – whatever you do, make sure you get out there and have fun!

August anemones

If you are wondering what grows well under trees and also blooms this time of year, look no further than Japanese anemones. They have pretty pink, mauve or white flowers and cheery yellow centres and often last right into the autumn.

A fruitful summer

Growing your own produce is a popular pastime and it’s hard to beat eating fruit fresh from the tree! As well as tasting devine, it’s healthier and eco-friendly – and wildlife love it too. If you don’t want a tree, then consider a fruit bush.

Apricots can be grown as trees or bushes, or trained against a wall. There are also compact varieties for a patio container. Or maybe your favourite is a cherry, plum or peach? Talk to usabout it and we can help you choose the right variety for you.

Discover the deer

It’s fawn season and if you fancy a stroll in the beautiful 700-acre Deer Park at Petworth, you may be lucky to see a few. If they elude you, don’t worry you can still enjoy the park – one of the finest surviving examples of an English landscape designed by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown. And don’t forget to visit the café too.

Perfect parasols

If you like a BBQ and a relaxing read and glass of wine – but want a bit of protection from the sun (or rain), there are some stylish parasols and outdoor umbrellas around right now. Good Housekeeping have 15 best picks here. And we like some of these on
